Stuff You Should Know

“It took me fifteen years to discover I had no talent for writing, but I couldn’t give it up because by that time I was too famous.” — Robert Benchley

It’s one of the most familiar of pop culture tropes: some dimwitted husband in the world of movies, TV, radio, comic strips, etc. forgets a birthday or wedding anniversary or what-have-you and winds up facing the wrath of his significant other for his thoughtlessness.  (I’m not being deliberately sexist when I ascribe this to the husband…it’s just that I can’t recall a wife ever forgetting.)  “How could anyone forget a special occasion like that?” I’d often ask myself.  The birthdays of my parents and two sisters are tattooed into my brain; I’ve even managed to remember the birthdays of my brother- and sister-in-law, their kids, and their respective wedding anniversaries. (I’m not likely to forget my parents’ anniversary soon, either.)

15-yearsYet this lapse of memory became a reality Tuesday night as the ‘rents and I were watching the election returns (hey—that’s just how we roll at Rancho Yesteryear, baby) and I suddenly remembered that I neglected to mark down another year of blogging on Sunday.  Fifteen years ago on that date (November 4), I launched Thrilling Days of Yesteryear as a little project to help alleviate the boredom that comes with hotel night auditing…and no one is more surprised than I am how TDOY keeps chugging along.  Granted, I don’t seem to be able to post as much as I did in the past (I can only attribute this to laziness, a crippling affliction from which I have suffered my whole life) but in an age where blogs are no longer the “hot” thing (they’ve taken a back seat to “tweets” and/or pithy comments on Facebook) it’s nice to know that I have an outlet for my scribblings in addition to the work that people pay me to do (hence the Benchley quote).

So...a belated blogiversary to my ‘umble scrap of the blogosphere, and for those of you who still make it a habit to stop by now and then to see what feverish thoughts I have on an old movie or TV show I’ve watched of late, thank you so much.

  1. Happy Quindecennial, Ivan! As you know, the traditional 15th anniversary gift is crystal, but I don’t have any, so I got you a Krystal Sackfull, featuring a wide selection of Original, Cheese, and Bacon Cheese Krystals. Unfortunately, I ate them, but I’d still like credit for my good intentions. Not for myself, but because Hell’s roads are gettin’ a little bumpy.

(I completely forgot to note World O’ Crap’s 15th back in August, but considering how often I post nowadays, it might easily have been construed as sarcasm.)

    1. Ah, bless you me boyo for the Krystal swag. (Or what’s left of it.) I can’t remember the last time I’ve had a Krystal which is odd considering that I do live in Georgia and that you can throw a piano and hit one. (I’ll always fondly remember Krystal as being the place where you eat if you had no money. Or if you were stumbling out of a bar at 3am. I can’t remember which. My memory really is going.)

Profuse apologies for not noting Crap’s 15th as well. The TDOY faithful may know that I got into the blogging bidness as a fan of WoC, thinking to myself “Hey, I could do this, too!” So belated blogiversary to you and S.Z. (who has retired from blogging to do good charitable work with canines and felines).

  2. Congrats, Ivan, on your blog’s 15th year! It;’s an impressive achievement and I want to thank you for 1.5 decades of witty writing and coverage of some wonderful (and sometimes lesser-known) movies and TV series.
