It is indeed an honor and a pleasure to announce the two winners of Thrilling Days of Yesteryear’s Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar: Confidential giveaway…and they are David O., from the wilds of Colorado, and Amanda C. from…well, she sort of kept that info a secret. (Can’t say that I blame her. Oh, I know I mentioned something about exploiting them for the purposes of TDOY but I decided to withhold their last names—not because they’re in the Witness Protection Program or anything like that, but because they could suffer serious social repercussions should any of their friends find out they read this blog on occasion.) The victors will each receive a 10-CD set (a $39.98 value) containing ten five-part serialized adventures of the man with the action-packed expense account, originally heard over CBS Radio in 1956. Each set contains a collectible liner note booklet written by your humble narrator, and once again I just want to thank everybody who entered—I’m not joshing when I say that I received more responses in this giveaway than any previous TDOY promotion, and I wish I could have given everyone a set just for their keen interest in the blog…though I have a sneaking suspicion that most of you have never even heard of TDOY and were just in it for the free swag. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that…)
What’s that you just heard? More free swag? No, your ears aren’t deceiving you—it just so happens that at the same time I was working on the Dollar collection I also did a project of wartime Edgar Bergen & Charlie McCarthy broadcasts (the collection is entitled Homefront Charlie), which have also just been released by the grand folks at Radio Spirits and I have two sets of that collection to give away as well. Here’s the deal—if you entered the Johnny Dollar contest and weren’t a winner, I’m going to automatically enter you into the drawing for the Bergen & McCarthy set. (It’s just the kind of swell guy I am, really!) Of course, if you want to send me an e-mail saying “include me out” because Edgar & Charlie aren’t your particular cup of Orange Pekoe I’ll certainly understand. But there are some hilarious broadcasts in this collection—twenty in all, on ten CDs (again, the SRP on this is $39.98)—with big name Hollywood guests like Judy Garland, Walter Brennan, Ronald Colman, Claudette Colbert, Humphrey Bogart and Orson Welles…just to name a few.
So if you sent me an e-mail for the Dollar contest and weren’t a winner (it’s kind of hard fighting back the “day late and a dollar short” pun) you don’t have to send me a duplicate entry; it’s all taken care of. But if you’d like a chance to win one of two Bergen & McCarthy CD sets simply shoot me an e-mail with “Homefront Charlie” in the subject header at igsjrotr(at)gmail(dot)com and you could be a very lucky winner. The deadline for entries will be next Tuesday (April 19) at 11:59pm EDT; I’ll choose two lucky winners via Random.org and get those prizes out in the mail as quickly as possible. One other thing—there’ll be just a teensy delay in my mailing out the Dollar collections only because the ‘rents are making a pilgrimage to our old Savannah stomping grounds later today (someone needs a prescription refilled) and so I won’t be Publixing with Mom on Wednesday; I’ll take them down to the USPS next week following Mom and Dad’s triumphant return to Athens, complete with ticker-tape parade. (Okay, I may be exaggerating a tad.) Thrilling Days of Yesteryear—where the winning tradition continues!
