If you were to tie me up and threaten me with lighted matches in an effort to get me to confess why I watched The Partridge Family as a kid, I still wouldn’t be able to tell you. My usual excuse is that it was probably one of my sisters who loved the show and that the three of us had to acquiesce to that individual’s viewing demands in the days when families had only one television set. But as much as I can remember, both my sisters were like me—they were pretty blasé about the show…truth be told, we preferred The Brady Bunch.
But the show was part of my childhood, and the fact that it premiered over ABC forty years ago on this date just goes to show that my viewing habits weren’t very sophisticated back then…and that it’s hard to believe that that much time has passed since its debut. Once again, I raised my hand and shouted “Oooh…ooh ooh!” when Ed Copeland asked if anyone wanted to have a go at writing up a little commemorative observation, and you can read all about it here.
I don’t recall the episode—it might be the one with Richard Pryor—but there was a dialogue exchange that made me laugh hard and gave me a line that I get to use every now and then if the Gods of Comedy are feeling generous. Someone compliments manager Reuben Kincaid’s neckwear with “Nice tie”—“Thanks…guy couldn’t guess my weight, so…” is his response. (Well, I thought it was funny.)
